Okay, we’ve been going on about making a new thread for this, but no one actually has so far. So here are the details as far as I know them.

    Deb28 – Jackrum
    Lillythepink57 – Polly
    TheOtherDibbler – Maladict
    The Duck – Wazzer?
    The Duck’s sister – Lofty
    Littleowl – ??
And I think a cardboard Jade, is that correct?

We still need Shufti, Igorina, Tonker and the rupert I believe.

I will ask my sister about designing a multi-sized pattern for the jackets by the end of the year. If she can make one, copies or the original would have to be mailed around to everyone.

Sharonkay also suggested visiting: http://www.folkwear.com to see if they have a suitable jacket pattern. If they do either we’d all have to buy one, or else one or two would need to be bought and mailed around (as with the above option).

Sharonkay will ask her mother about possibly designing a shako pattern. Again this would have to be sent around and we’d all have to find someone to make them for us, or else put in a mass-order to someone to make them all for us.

    Have I left anything out?

I will consider being Lt Blouse, but I am pretty much useless at my own costume design & sewing, which is why I haven’t volunteered up until now. Plus I guess I’d have to shave, but that’s no big loss :p

So… because I can’t guarantee being able to make/obtain a decent jacket that matches everyone elses’, I’m kind of reluctant to join the In and Outs without some sort of help :/

I spoke to my sister. She says she can make a jacket pattern that can be adjusted to fit sizes 8 through 16 (inclusive) in Australian women’s standard sizes. Anything outside that range would require a different pattern, and she hasn’t got the capacity to do that currently. The pattern will be unisex of course, so any male-types requiring one who fit in that general size range will be covered.

She won’t be able to do anything until mid-December at the earliest, though, because she won’t have time until after her classes and final assessments are done. With Christmas and work and all this may become early January, but as the con isn’t until the end of February this shouldn’t really be a problem.

She also said she would be willing to take on sewing commissions for those who are unable to sew their own jackets and have no one else to do it for them. She’d only be able to do one or two though, three at the most, and you’d have to pay of course, price would be dependant on cost of materials and time and effort required to make the jackets.

In the meantime, I guess we all just keep looking for a suitable ready-made pattern. I couldn’t find anything at folkwear.com, but I can’t really claim to have made an exhaustive search of their catalogue.

Excellent. Sorry everyone. My beloved wire less connecter thingy that is attached to the back of my lap top decided to die late Monday night and up until tonight, yay for late night shopping, I have not been able to get here. I have sent an enquiry to the Cunning Artificer about the shako medallions and as yet recieved no reply but I am generally tenacious and also able to make things with plaster of paris so we may still get some joy. I have had a quiet word with my mother and as long as the pattern doesn’t have to be too much larger (say 22 max) she should be able to expand on a pattern if someone else makes the original so that should cover us all I think.

Thanks Dibbler. We shall all have to shower your sister with presents.

Another thing to think about when trying to find costume elements – there’s /definitely/ been a few theatre groups (at least in the UK) who’ve put on the show as a play. Unfortunately, Unseen in Adelaide isn’t one of them, otherwise I could have arranged to borrow whatever they used…

Unseen’s plays have used a /red/ army uniform in past (for Night Watch, Jingo) but this isn’t the blue and white that is what the Borogravians wear.

So… if we can find stuff, there’s no harm in contacting the UK theatre companies and asking them how they did their shakos/jackets etc etc.

Molokov – i wouldn’t worry about the shaving thing – he never actually gets shaved in the books much does he? only a few times by Jackrum cause Polly has no idea :P
And the jackets are red aren’t they? What are the blue and white ones?
I distinctly remember Polly making a comment about them “wearing bleeding red in a bleeding grey forest”

Er… yeah, now that you mention it, the jackets are red and white. Serves me right from going from memory and not looking at the bloody book cover. Hmm I’ll have to ask if the red jackets are actually owned by Unseen and if I can borrow them for the DW Con next year. I guess it will depend on whether they need them for next year’s Fringe play (which is at the same time as the Con!)

As to shaving… well, I have a full goatee – and the men (and “men”) in the Borogravian army are all clean shaven, even though Lt Blouse isn’t very good at doing it himself. So at the very least I could get away with stubble. :p (I don’t mind shaving, I’ve done it for costumes before…)

Hmm… some photos from stage productions:

This one’s in Australia! – maybe we can arrange to borrow some? (Assuming some perthicans are coming to the Con)

Where did I remember seeing a blue uniform with a shako??? Memory’s playing tricks…

the other army is in green and brown I think.
I think that the Australian Colonial English Jailers wore the red uniform. I am looking into it. Maybe we can get a uniform the least conventional way.

    Keep you posted.

The ‘1812 Officer’s Coatee’? I think that one looks pretty good. And the cost plus shipping would come to just over $20 shouldn’t it? If the shipping is actually $5? I have no idea what the sizes translate as though.

Edit: No PayPal option, I for one don’t have a credit card.

On the longago.com site the patterns are given a size, then the numbers in brackets are most likely to be the chest measurement and being a US site, this figure will be in inches. Multiply by 2.5 to get the measurement in cm.

I’m working on convincing a few other younger female friends of mine to come to the Con, and so if need be, we can fill up some other empty roles in the Regiment that people haven’t already volunteered for :)

I do have a credit card, so if this is the one we want than I can get it. Plus size just means that its generally easier to downsize than upsize also I get the impression from the book that they would have chosen the roomier option so as not to expose their attributes, ahem…
Also on a side note don’t forget, socks, washed mind you, are essential to everyman’s uniform.
