    Hi folks,

Any chance we can get some links to various hotels/motels/backpackers/serviced apartments near to the Convention site?

I’m not expecting any special deals to have been arranged yet, but it would be nice to know what’s near by so we can start investigating accommodation options.

    Thanks!

I just stayed in a great hotel not far from RMIT, it was the best western i think, right near lygon st.
Corner of grattan and drummond sts.
It has a pool, so bring your bathers ;D

But yeah, tis fairly easy to access by a short tram down swanston st.

*Mum says there’s an RACV discount apparently.

I looked to book online at the Best Western and it says Fri and Sat are unavailable. Does anyone happen to know how far away Victoria Street is? Although anywhere in Melbourne is only a short tram ride, right? Also is the Site near the City loop tram or is it just any tram to Carlton?

The site it directly opposite melb central station and it runs right beside any trams on Swanston st or La trobe st ( i think) so any trams that head up/down the city or across ways will go right past. tis a really easy spot to get to.
Victoria st may be a little far out, but should be fine if you can follow a map and dont mind public transport in a costume ;p

there’s also a handy little one on little bourke – right in the middle of china town, we tried to get in there, but it was all booked for grand final weekend.

If you can find anything near the queen vic, thats a handy location also, plenty of trams right into the city there, and there are quite a few hostels there i think.

Okay, we’re pretty close to finalising gala dinner details at a hotel, and we might be able to get a deal with the hotel for room prices. That said, it’s understandable that you might want to book a room somewhere now.

As Lilly has mentioned, RMIT is opposite Melbourne Central (the shopping centre, which contains Melbourne Central Station). It’s the corner of Swanston and Latrobe Streets, and there’s trams going along both. Any tram going to/from Melbourne Uni goes past RMIT along Swanston, and the City Circle tram goes along Latrobe. Victoria St is only a couple of blocks away to the north – a short walk. Little Bourke St, to the south, is definitely walking distance as well.

Well I’ve been looking for accommodation for the Con, and so figured I’d make some people’s searching easier through the power of Google Maps.

Here’s a list of pretty much every hotel, motel, apartments and backpacker hostels near the Con venues. There may be omissions, I’m sure, but I’ve limited myself to a small radius around RMIT and the Ibis Hotel. (The colours are supposed to represent Hotel/Apartment/Backpacker but there’s possibly some mixup in them too, I didn’t check every single link’s website)

Click here for the funky map

I’ve not quite decided on where I’m staying yet – me and my friends are probably going to get an apartment-like room somewhere, and there’s a fair few very close to the Con venues, so it’s now a matter of weighing up cost vs distance vs how nice the place looks.

The Ibis looks good for me. Anyone interested in sharing/splitting costs? At present, I’m looking at checkin on 26/02 and checkout on 02/03.
I don’t smoke/drink, but do consume hideous amounts of chocolate!

Is the webmaster/anyone willing to set up a ‘matching service’ for people wanting to pool resources such as hotel rooms to keep costs down?

Why do it tomorrow when it can be put off indenfinetly?

Well after a lot of website scouring and back-and-forthing, my friends and I have now booked at the Habourview Apartment Hotel on LaTrobe. It looks to be fairly budget but also reasonable, and we wanted to get one big room to share with a kitchenette, so it seems to meet those requirements :) Plus it’s pretty damn close to RMIT!

Hey everyone. Sorry we’ve been so quite here on this thread, we’re actually currently in negotiations in regards to a venue with accommodation. So for those of you who are looking for accommodation where con stuff will be happening we are dealing with the Ibis (15-21 Therry Street). Look forward to an announcement on this front in the near future.

Too little time and those who are interested in doing accommodation share, feel free to organize that here on the forums. Alternatively I can start a matching service for those looking to do shared accommodation. So if you e-mail me at mark@audwcon.org with a little bit of information I can get you in touch with someone who is looking for similar accommodation/check in and out times/etc.

i had a look at the ibis site, seems to be a good idea to stay there what with all the activities going on there.
I couldn’t book further than mid jan atm though, so we might have to call up, or just wait a while.

Hi Lilly, are you sure you got the right Ibis, on Therry St? Because I booked and paid for my accommodation at least a month ago on the website and there was no problem.
