    Hi everyone,

As you probably know, both Granny W and myself attended the UK Discworld Convention over the weekend, and it was fantastic.

Here’s my detailed report if you want to read it.

Also, I Shall Wear Midnight was released today in the UK, so I grabbed a copy for GBP9.49 and will read it on the plane on the flight home tomorrow! I think that price has got to be better than anywhere in Australia at the moment, right?

Why didn’t you tell us you were still around after the con? We would have got you into the signing – and maybe even a free glass of cheap sawdusty New Zealand wine 8-)

    Next time …

I’m so glad Molokov has written such a wonderful Livejournal entry about DWCON because I’m not a writer of great note. Go read his entry if you haven’t done so already – it’ll get you all fired up and itching to get to AUSDWCON. I’ll do my best to add a bit more from my perspective at a later stage, but right now I’m catching up on the whole housewife thing. Yes – 2 weeks worth of ironing, 6 weeks of dust, mildewed bathrooms, an empty fridge and an unwalked dog were all waiting for me when I got back. ;-) I think I need to adopt a Nanny Ogg persona and get me some daughters-in-law.

I’m sooooo jealous that you got “I shall wear Midnight” Danny! The blasted bookshops at the airport (I flew out on publication date) all had the Tony Blair book and not one copy of Midnight anywhere! I’ve ended up ordering from Amazon as usual and am awaiting the post with great anticipation.

Arrived home this morning, and I’m still awake… for how long, that’s the trick.

In any case, I did manage to finish “I Shall Wear Midnight” over the course of my 30-ish hour journey. It is a bloody awesome book and has some great new characters and surprise cameos which I won’t spoil. Plus some wonderfully funny bits that got me odd looks on the plane when I laughed out loud.

Oh and now I’ve actually met the real Constable Haddock (and had a drink with him at 5am) I can’t picture the character in the books any other way… but I guess that’s the point when Terry bases a character on a REAL person…

[FYI: Constable Pete Haddock is a big Discworld fan, and a real life police officer. Terry named the character after him. We also met the real life woman who was the inspiration for Adora Belle Dearheart]

    Wow, all that sounds GREAT!
Molokov, does the real Adora Belle smoke like a chimney? Love her. Was dissapointed when they did the “right” thing at the end of going Postal (mini series) and had her quit. She doesn’t quit!
Oh Granny… WHAT were those boys up to?! Obviously NOT cleaning or walking the dog. Poor Maddy.
PS. AMAZON??!! You should have ordered Midnight through FISHPOND! wrist slap

Re: Adora. Yes, yes she does. But luckily only outside the hotel so we didn’t have to put up with most of the smoking.

Ok – I have to admit that I didn’t know that ‘Midnight’ was coming out in Australia on the same date. Shoot me – I was in the UK for 6 weeks and saw no advertising via RHA on FB, or ahywhere else for that matter. So when I got back I ordered from amazon – then cancelled the order before it was shipped when I realised it was in actual bookshops here in australia! Got mine from QBD because I was too impatient to wait the 7 – 12 days that Fishpond was offering. I’ve finished it now. :-)))

Our copy of I Shall Wear Midnight arrived safely in the post yesterday – just 5 days after hitting the bookshops. And it is substantially cheaper from Fishpond than either Angus and Robertson or Dymocks online. If you haven’t ordered it yet, just click on the image below.
