Most of you will be wondering what Significant Quest is, since nobody has heard of it.
It is an unnoficial Discworld board game created to be played at the convention.
Borrowing rules and gameplay themes from many different styles of game (in true Discworld fashion) the game simulates the God’s Game as seen in various books.

You play a God, you have a party of characters and make them travel around the world, collecting more followers for your cause and using events to wreak havoc upon other players’ characters!

There will be a Game Master to help run this game, with as many players as possible, most of whom will be new to the game the GM can help to keep it moving smoothly.

What Geelong really needs, right now, is a SFFiG

This sound’s like fun. I want to play too. Otherwise I’ll smite you with tornadoe’s and pestilence.

It’s always more fun when no one’s an expert (unless Im an expert too).

As an official guinea pig I can say that it is super fun. Unless you do not pass go and do not collect two hundred dollars. =)

Noah’s Ark is a problem. We’ll have to call it early quantum-state phenomenon.

You don’t have to have God names from the books, that part doesn’t really matter – it’s all about being the biggest and the best really.
Then again if you say “I’m Blind Io” and someone else does too then there’s a good reson to smite all their believers!

    To follow on from the praise on the favourites thread;
As the creator of the game I felt it was worth a try at the con, had considered showing Terry but didn’t want to come across as the Eager Fan. Thankyou for he encouragement and I will do something about making it more presentable and perhaps eventually show Terry to see what could be done with it.

As some people on Saturday mentioned it was a lot of work to get it to that point, months of playtesting to refine the rules with my good friends Christopher and Mark, and as always I’d like to thank Kerry for her encouragement, where otherwise I would have put it aside and labelled it as another one of my stupid ideas.

I’m always happy with suggestions and improvements so either post here or email me at ben@ausdwcon.org

    Yours gob-smackedly,
    ~Ben

My suggestion – and of course, you may need to clear this with Terry/Colin as well – is to make (initially) the board, cards, and rules available on a website somewhere so that fans can share this and make their own sets to play with their friends and further refine the game.

This way, we can send you suggestions for new cards, improvements to the existing cards/board/etc, and rule refinements or queries.

Of course, there still needs to be a central “official” port of control, which is you, the inventor of the game :)

If you think this could be an “official” saleable game, like Thud is, then by all means, protect your intellectual property, but if money isn’t the object, perhaps it’s OK to have a free, unofficial Discworld game, in the same style as Cripple Mister Onion (the rules are on the ‘net for free, noone pays money to the creators of the game), although of course, Significant Quest has a lot more bits and pieces :)

As you mentioned, Sarah was working on some artwork for bits and pieces of the game, and I would love to see the end result! :)

You can’t kill me because I’ve got magic aarrghh!

    Ben,

Lets see the game has elements of the following: -

    1) RPG’s – there is a Game master – who watches what is going on and acts as adjudicator
    2) Collectible card games like MtG
    3) Boardgames like thud etc
    4) Terry Pratchett flavoured

I wasn’t kidding when I said WOTC would want to buy it! It could be BIG. (at least as big as Thud).

Intellectual Property will be your friend here. (You DO need Terry’s permission if you intend to make money from this. There may also be discussions in regards to royalties).

I like Molokov’s suggestion that you create a group to help refine cards/rules/errata etc.

I’d release a basic card list so that the game can be played and then something you can add to with bonus packs (thats how WOTC made so much money with MtG).

    Just my two Cents

I would give almost anything to be able to turn Significant Quest into a widely playable game. That would include playtesting, discussions, playtesting, designs, playtesting, etc etc. If you’d like a group to help out, please count me (and Javen) in!

The game was fantastic and my first 2 cents that I came across as we played was that the only decernable endings are: One god stands alone while the others are squished, the apocralypse occurs or the 3 significant items are played.

Now, the feelings are since we had limited time in the Con and part of me wanted a way to have the game playable in an hour or two. Maybe some speed rules could be done as an optional? Put a time limit to the game or perhaps some optional rules that spice things up..

Just babbling since I’m at work with no one to serve :P

Actually I liked the basic mechanics, the balance was good, (what I saw of it). The “combat” was very unique, originally you think OK the best character is someone like Hrun the barbarian with his whopping 10 Ph, but the best characters need to have decent scores in all stats, like Lu Tze or the Librarian. (we saw Hrun get beaten by Gaspode the wonder dog when the combat was versus intelligence not strength tee hee).

    Ben,

Is this where we can ask questions? What’s the balance like between characters/events/items is it 1/3 each or balanced differently? How many cards in the pack at present?

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, I’m going to be thinking over a few things, doing a bit more work on the game, and set up a basic info site to begin with.

I greatly appreciate everyone’s eagerness, if it wasn’t for such long distances between us all I’d be organising games whenever possible, but I’m in Geelong and assume not many others are capable of coming this far.

    Questions are welcome;
I’m not sure ofthe exact balance at the moment, I’ve tried to keep it to 1/3 each but I know items are lacking a bit.
Trouble is for every new item I think of I remember 3 new characters and events that should be added as well.
