Warning: This thread is not for the light-hearted.
The cold hard truth is that some sessions may prove to be unpopular, not many attendees, or more importantly – not enough volunteers. So we need to cull what isn’t going to work before it happens.

So here is where we will post which sessions are in danger of being weeded out, so you can let us know if you’d like to help save it.

    To begin with:

    History Monks
This panel about history in general so far has no panelists. This is a good way for a panel to not work.
Potentially this panel could involve wonderful little facts pulled out of history about politics, religion and science resembling Discworld, or explaining some of the inspirations behind things such as Roundworld Clacks (which I have read a bit about but am not going to pretend to be able to explain).
If you want to help save this panel you must:
Know lots of otherwise useless stories such as the one where Lord Whatsisface and Pope Youknow invented the Thingamajig (or a bit more specific than that)
Have knowledge in a specific area (ie Military history) and explain some of the truth behind events in the books.

What Geelong really needs, right now, is a SFFiG

Hmm – I do know some odd facts about how London behaved along time ago…

Sounds like something I’d really want to listen to – but my history is just a little too piecemeal. . .

Damn, I would have thought this’d be one of the highlights! Damn my memory! I’ve learnt a lot of stuff that could be said to apply but without textbooks at my side I’d have no hope. Just thought I’d voice a plea. :)

This is one I could possibly do with a few months os research under my belt. You know: the research where I make sure that what I think I know is actually true. Conviction is helpful, but not quite sufficient for the type of panel we’re looking at. I’ll volunteer for the next convention. Whaddya reckon?

I know stuff about ancient civs. Like how the Greeks lived and some of the ancient Egyptian stuff… but to be any kind of expert I would have to read a hell of a lot of notes (that i kept for some reason since college… hmmm you never know when some things might come in handy) but mostly all i know is stuff that i founde amusing like the misstress of Plato being actually responsible for the war against the Ottoman empire…

I too studied a bit of History but without my beloved Roebucks I am useless. Maybe its time to call in DEATH on this one.

I’m not sure if this could work or not, but would it be possible to get together a slightly larger than planned panel (or explain it’s a large panel) and have everyone just look at the events of no more than three books. That way those involved can be quickly roped up and will still have time to prepare. Just a thought that could save this session, or perhaps doom it (I wouldn’t call it a million-to-one chance at this point, so it probably won’t work)

Maybe if we make all the volunteers stand on one leg with one hand tied behind their back? That could bring it up the the million to one chance position.

Ah yes, I forgot the blindfold. And they have to stand (on one leg) on a very high unstable roof. That should do it.

Thanks for the suggestion Fedora! This could certainly be taken on board, we still need the people first unfortunately.
At this late stage, with only one definite volunteer it’s looking like History Monks might be dropped.
So here is the final call, as Fedora suggested the format and style of the panel can be changed so if you have your own ideas on how you would be happy to be invovled then feel free in order to save this panel.

Also, and I’m suprised to have to mention this one – we have no volunteers for Future of Discworld
This is the speculation panel – talk about what you think what you think could, should and should not happen in the future of the Disc.
All you will need for this panel is a vast knowledge of the Discworld, and an imagination.
Don’t worry – Terry’s not allowed into this one so say what you like!
I’ll possibly be on this one if we need people, who else wants to see Lu-Tze revealed to really be Vetinari in disguise? or is it the other way around?

Would anyone fancy trying a free-for-all version of History Monks?

As this is a warm up session for those who have managed to skive off work for the extra day and being hours before the opening ceremony, I’m not expecting every member to have arrived. Would anyone want to turn up and just discuss the interesting things people know about history?

(Hmm Australia + informal = beer)
