What would you have liked to see at the con in the way of sessions that we didn’t have?
Tell us any new ideas here!
What else?

Dissection of the Watch
Behind the closed doors of the watch. Comparing how the watch of Ankh-Morpork fares against the counter-parts of the round world. Looking at the techniques used by the watch and deciding wether they are at all believable. Cutting open the people of the watch and looking at what makes them so interesting to so many readers. Basically a comprehensive panel all about the watch. =)I have a phone number of someone to badger about this if you want it Grombek. I’m not actually putting my hand up to run this. ;p

That’s a good idea, Owl.
Also, how about parallels between the books and the roundworld events, characters and and human traits etc being commented on.
I enjoy reading the books and then checking through L-space web to find out what I was actually reading about.
This then usually sends me on Google searches to read up on my new-found knowledge.
A 15 minute presentation on a few of the books, with illustrative slides, could be interesting – I’d certainly put my hand up for a couple.

I like the idea of the short talks… keeps things interesting and varied over a decent timeframe.

An idea that bounced around my head the last few days, maybe…
- Readings and/or performances of some of Terry’s Short Stories. There was probably quite a few people at the Con who haven’t had the chance to read all of the great short stories, and I had my copy of “Once More With Footnotes” with me which a lot of people hadn’t even heard of – and now, it’s either very hard or very expensive to get!
For example, I can do quite a good reading/performance of “Turntables of the Night” – this is one that we actually dramatised back in 2002 for the Adelaide Fringe (together with Theatre of Cruelty, Troll Bridge and Hollywood Chickens) and performed them together as ‘Pratchett Pieces’.
Turntables is told in first person, and I was the lucky sod who got to play that role. There are a few other characters in the story – but I wouldn’t mind reading the whole thing putting on appropriate character voices. It’d take about 15-20 minutes.
If there’s any other ‘performers’ out there who could pick a short story and learn how to read it out and do different character voices etc, then we could happily fill an hour. Sort of like a “Where’s My Cow?” reading but allowing people who may not have read the short stories to hear them for the first time in a drama-like way.
(I’d be happy to do some of the other stories too – like Troll Bridge, Hollywood Chickens, Final Reward, or maybe Once and Future, but obviously doing them all is a lot of work and I’m sure there’s a lot of people out in the Discworld fandom world with a bit of a thespian inside them too :p)

More stalls would be good. Maybe there could be a way of contacting craft type businesses (like rahball) to commision some stuff to sell.
I had an idea for a present for a friend – find someone skilled in woodcraft to make truncheons like Vimes’s one that have a plaque with “Protector of the Kinges Piece” on it.
We could have other novelty-ish type gifts too, loosely based on the books. We’re on a mission from Glod.

That’s a great idea, Lily – and it breaks out of the mould of the usual coffee mug and pen stuff – which I think would still be in demand.
I would really like to have a say on merchandising for the next con – and I’ve already put my hand up to be on the committee.
There is a risk that low production runs could be expensive per item and leave the organisers with non-returnable stuff, but I reckon that product can be shifted one way or another after the con’s finished anyway, so I would give it a go.

Merchandise would probably have to be convention specific, but it’s certainly worth a chat with Pterry and Colin about!

I’d like to see a concept from the Roundworld discussed with reference to the Discworld. Like, If there was an Olympics on the Discworld, what would be the problems, what would work really well, and what would be really funny (Trolls objecting to Dope testing, for example. Dwarf tossing as an Olympic sport?).
Or how about what would happen if some Discworld countries were banned from using magic by the more Powerful City States (like A-M) on account of how they’re not wise enough and developed enough to use it just for good (whilst A-M is of course, just look at the Unseen University and that not-quite magical melt-down in Sourcery).
I love the idea of the readings from lesser known short stories. I’ve missed most of those, so I would love to listen or participate. Molokov, if you do Turntables i will be in your audience.
As for merchandise – thats a difficult one because you don’t want anyone to go out on a financial limb in case they are not well supported at the Con. That said, pre-ordering (and pre-paying for collection at the Con)through the Nullus Anxietas web site of Paul Kidby wares or other Discworld products could be a possible alternative, and would give organisers an idea of what people would genuinely spend their money on.
I’d also suggest that any bookshop / publisher with a stand should have it pointed out to them that most of us have the novels. What we don’t ALL have is the maps, the graphic novels, the Art books, almanacs, Science of Discworld, plays and short stories. I would have spent a fortune on those if they had been available because I have yet to see a bookshop that stocks them. As it was, all I bought was the two maps I didn’t already have.
I can’t be having with foreign parts

Granny, I guess not finding such stuff in bookstores is one disadvantage of living in Mt Isa?
I’ve seen most items available at the major chains (Dymocks/A&R/Borders) in major cities over the years. This includes most of the playscripts, all maps, art books etc. Only some specialty stuff (eg Once More with Footnotes) are never in stores. Then again, to be honest, I have ordered the majority of the playscripts from amazon.co.uk, well before they were released here. (I’ve got all the published ones). But you’re right – I’d suspect most of us actually have most of the novels, and it’s all the extra stuff that some people may not own or even have heard about :)
I still haven’t bought the UU cut-out book because I know I won’t ever make it, but I’m sure if/when the price drops, I’ll pick it up just to be completist :)

This may be only of interest to me (the marketer) but a look at DW commerce, ethics and selling techniques, i.e Dibbler the pie seller, versus the music promoter versus the movie producer versus advertising executive… Small business versus big business and other such commercial activity. if I was on Discworld what would I sell?
Like I said I may be a sad minority of one who finds this interesting but this is a thread to float ideas, so I’m floating away.

molokov, waving
putting up hand to help with the readings..I’ve done some time with another theatre group that used to do practiced readings, or foyer productions so you had minimal props and costumes, and they’re great fun!
.. um.. we’re talking Melbourne-ish, aint we?Doh – should have read your location – but whats a different state matter!

What would TOTALLY rule would be if we could actually have a Dibbler wandering around selling pies and stuff.. I caould have died for a pie at that con! As it was I ate WAAAYYY too many wedges.
I could even make some rats on a stick for those of a shorter persuasion… maybe. Pies would probably cover it though.“crivens”

There would have to be something we could call a rat pie. . . I love the idea.
