We know that quite a few of you will be staying over on the Thursday evening, and may not be sure what to do. Knowing that Terry is a keen amateur astronomer, we have approached our local observatory with a view to showing him some of the spectacles of the southern sky. The observatory has offered to put on a presentation on “Searching for Life in the Universe” followed by stargazing through the University’s computerised telescopes (weather permitting). We cannot guarantee that you will see any star turtles though, but hopefully several other astronomical wonders. It would run for about 2 hours from 7pm until 9pm.
They can accommodate 30 people or so. We would organise coach travel to and from the observatory, and would ask for a contribution of about $10 each towards the cost. If you are interested in the idea, could you please email enquiries@ausdwcon.org and let us know of your interest.

Sounds…. intriguing. Not certain I’m going to be ready to rush off around 7pm, so I might give it a skip. I suspect I may not get to the hotel until around 6 and then I still have to run a few errands.
If anyone’s around the hotel on the Thursday night and /not/ going to the Observatory, I’ll see if I can find people to have dinner with :)

I was pleasantly surprised by the keen response when I first announced this. We have a full coach booked.The observatory are opening up the dome and letting us use the BIG telescope, as well as two smaller but rather sophisticated digitally controlled telescopes. All we need now are clear skies on the night.

Er, Kelshandra… this was for NA3 last year. So you’ve missed it by more than 12 months. I’m not sure any standby lists exist any more…
