I recommend verbal abuse. It’s the only way (well, maybe not – but could be worth a try).

Im thinking of getting myself a set for Christmas.
I’ll have to try and convert a chess player or something so I’ll have someone to play with.

Thud actually reminds me of a game that I used to play back in my medieval re-enactment days called Hnefatafl. The only difference being that I suck at playing Thud. (Says he who has only played it twice because no-one else is interested down here)

I was wondering if most people prefer to be Dwarf’s rather than Troll’s. In the book the Dwarf’s seemed a lot more intelligent than the Troll’s.

I actually prefer the Trolls because they are really quite easy to use. =)

There is a line in Going Postal (I think, or was it Thud!?) that mentions the type of person that plays as Dwarfs and the type of person that plays as Trolls…
It would be relevant here is all I’m saying – anyone know what I’m talking about?

Having only played a few games, my impressions of Thud are:
- The Trolls have the definite advantage at the beginning of the game, and hence any Troll player worth their salt needs to destroy as many dwarfs as they can as soon as they can.
- If the Dwarfs can form a block and eliminate one or two trolls as the game progresses, then they have mastery over the remainder of the round.
There’s 32 dwarfs to 8 trolls, so Troll players should try to not lose their pieces, unless they can guarantee four or more dwarfs in exchange. The Dwarf player can afford to sacrifice one or two dwarfs quite easily to put the trolls into a bad position, or to capture even one troll.
With a bit of sneaky thinking it is possible (not necessarily easy!) to win as both races, but it does take strategy and forethought. Which is why Thud is such a good game :)

Thanks for the tip Grombek. That’s the sort of thing I like to know. I wondered about who and why in choice of game piece’s.
Like who want’s black or white in chess.
Now Ive got to read Going Postal and Thud right away.
Ive got Thud and was thinking of taking Going Postal home today interestingly.
There’s definitely something I have to find out. I still have’nt played yet so everything is still ok. If no one wanted to be the dwarf’s then I suppose we’d have to toss a coin or take turn’s at being dwarf’s.‘in an infinite universe everything that can be imagined must exist somewhere’

Well you end up using the dwarves no matter what. If you use the dwarves in the first half of the round then you have to use the trolls in the second half or vice versa.

Carpe Jugulum is a good read especially if you are a fan of the witches of Lancre. I prefered it to Thud actually although that is probably just because I am not a huge fan of the watch series. Enjoy. =)

I’ve played Thud all of once (one round troll/one round dwarf) and got soundly trounced in both rounds. I started well enogh with the trolls but the little buggers started launching at me from all directions, and b the time I got round to playing the dwarfs I just gave up. too much wine.

Yeah, wine and stragety games are rarely a good mix.
