Early Bird Tickets Going Cheep - but not for much longer!

Greetings from the desk of Miss Perspicacia Tick.

Whether you're steeping herbs in the Ramtops, sidestepping curses in Ankh-Morpork, or simply trying not to wake the household spirits - welcome to another issue of Broomsticks and Cauldrons.

This compact conjuring of news and nonsense is for witches, wizards, and the less magically minded. Expect curious updates, a sprinkle of wisdom, and the occasional spell you didn't ask for but probably need.

So, grab your pointy hat, polish your boots, and try not to anger any eldritch entities - it's time to dive into the news that joins the realms!

In this issue:

  • One week left before the Early Bird takes flight
  • A Special Recruitment

A Special Recruitment!

Do you have the simple, dedicative qualities of Carrot or the snarling finesse of Angua?

We want you! As a new recruit!

Granny Weatherwax, a witch in a black cloak and hat, is pointing at the viewer in the style of the famous Uncle Sam poster. She holds You, the small white kitten, who is smiling happily.

On behalf of the Watch, the Witches invite you to become our Safety, Health, and Security officer.

Are you able to:

  • Handle difficult situations with care and confidence?
  • Manage a team of security volunteers (The Watch), including First Aiders?
  • Ensure only registered participants and guests attend the convention, and that the replica weapons policy is adhered to?
  • In case of an emergency, herd2 the crowd to the meeting place, and liaise with the hotel regarding their fire evacuation strategy?
  • In case of an incident or accident, liaise with hotel security staff and local law enforcement (if necessary), and write formal reports?

If so, then we would love to hear from you. Please contact us via the volunteer form and tell us you're the Carrot3 or Angua, we've been waiting for.

What A Jolly Hogswatch in July!

What a fantastical night!

Hogswatch hilarity happened; Hogswatch songs were sung.

Presents were wrapped; much eating and quaffing done.

The Hogfather and his hogs were a welcoming sight.

Thank you to all who attended and made it a merry, merry night.

MORE Events and Activities.

Here are some more awesome workshops and events. They are free except for the Gala Dinner4.

Sign up for one, or as many as you like, while at the convention. Some events have limited places - to be advised.

  • The Cat's Chorus - A Discworld-themed sing-along. You will know the tunes, but leave it to Mrs Cake and Nanny Ogg to give you these new versions.
  • Headology - Our Head Witch will talk you through the psychology behind Granny Weatherwax's unique insights into the human ( or other races) mind.
  • The Play's The Thing - join with other convention attendees to read parts from various Pratchett Plays.
  • Going Postal Talk - joining us through the magic of the mystic portal, Bev Doyle and Richard Kurti will walk us through the process and events surrounding the writing of the screenplay for the movie, Going Postal.

There are too many activities to list in the here and now. Plenty more to come next time and the time after that.

Discworld Events around Australia

Fan Club news

Several events are happening across the nation, and the chilly weather brings thoughts of Hogswatch. As mentioned earlier, Sydney hosted a Hogswatch in July dinner, which was a load of fun. By the time you receive this newsletter, the South Australian fan club City of Small Gods will have also held a special Hogswatch in Grune dinner. And a little birdy5 whispered in my ear that the famous Quiz Long and Prosper Science Fiction and Fantasy quiz night will return in October 2025.

Details about other Discworld fan groups can be found here.

Night Watch

Earlier this year, Night Watch was re-released as a Penguin Modern Classics, complete with annotations. One of the annotators - Professor David Lloyd, Vice-Chancellor of UniSA - will be talking about the book with science communicator Robyn Williams, at UniSA on Wednesday 3rd September. The event is free - and also available as a live stream - but you will need to register in advance. Find out more and register here.
