Volunteers needed, Venue news, and Very fun activities announced!

Ach, aye! A Michty Greetin' Tae All Our Canny Coven!

A crochet doll of Rob Anybody Feegle, carrying a large sword

Right, listen up, ye fine broom-ridin' bonnie bunch! 'Tis yer wee pal Rob Anybody 'ere, scribblin' this missive wi' the grace o' a hedgehog on roller skates an' the spelling skills o' a ship wi' a quill (an' believe me, we tried that once - dinnae ask). Now then, we've got tales tae tell, spells tae sling, an' a sale on cauldrons big enough tae fit a ship, if ye're daft enough tae try cookin' one whole - not that we'd recommend it, mind, unless the ship deserved it. Big things brewin' this month, aye - an' nae just the potions!

Ahem1, if I may? From the desk of Miss Perspicacia Tick, with the help of Mr Anybody, included in this issue of Broomsticks and Cauldrons:

  • Accommodation news...or not
  • Volunteers - please respond
  • More activities announced
  • Fun Facts
  • World News (Stephen Briggs play) and Australian Fan Club news

But first ... a special welcome to those of you who have received our entertaining, and sometimes funny, Broomsticks and Cauldrons newsletter for the first time. Now that you're here you are probably asking... 'What did I miss?' All previous issues of our newsletter can be found on our website here. Now sit back and enjoy.

Accommodation at our Hotel

We are securing an excellent room rate just for you, so you'll get the best price when booking directly with the Stamford Plaza Airport Sydney Hotel and Conference Centre. Our Venue Witch is working her magic and using her finest Headology to negotiate the best possible deal - but this does take a little time.

Thank you for your patience while she works her spell!

When bookings open, announcements will be shared in the Brooms and Cauldrons newsletter, on the website2 and across the socials.

Oi! Lend us yer lugs!

We Need oor Beloved Volunteers!

Granny Weatherwax, a witch in a black cloak and a black pointy hat, points her finger at the viewer, in the style of the classic Uncle Sam poster. In one hand she holds a small, white, smiling kitten, named You. "Granny Wants You". Get it?

Ye ken, these bonnie Australian Discworld Conventions dinna run on magic (well, no' entirely) - they run on pure, unfiltered volunteer power. Aye, even the folk on the committee! Without brave souls willin' tae muck in, these gatherings would vanish faster than a Feegle wi' someone else's lunch.

Now, we ken fine well that stickin' yer hand up tae help-especially if it's yer first convention-can feel a wee bit like facin' doon a horde o' rampagin' lawyers (an' we dinnae recommend that). But dinna worry! We won't throw ye in the deep end wi' a bagpipe an' a cryptic map. We give out jobs that suit yer skills-or at least won't scare the wits outta ye3.

Some bits, like runnin' tech or wranglin' crowds, might need a wee bit o' know-how. Maybe ye've been an usher, herded cats, or can read a map without endin' up in the broom cupboard. That helps. But really, all ye truly need is enthusiasm. Start there, an' you're already ten steps ahead.

Reet now, we're lookin' for any of ye folks willing tae dive inta the deep end, join the press corpse or anythin' else, really.

So, if ye fancy lendin' a hand (or both hands, or possibly a foot if it's free), head over tae the Volunteer page. There's more info there, an' a way tae sign up.

More activities announced

  • Bedtime Stories - where would a Discworld Convention be without Bedtime Stories? Come in (modest) sleeping attire (bring your cuddly toys too) to listen to short extracts from some of Terry's most loved works.
  • Dessert Island Books - returns after a brief absence. A panel discussion where Guests tell us which book they will be taking, along with their potato, to a secluded dessert island. (It's made of cake and icecream, ye ken)
  • Maskerade - our traditional costume/talent/prop competition. Strut your funky stuff, Jools style, and show us what you have created in costume or other media. There will be prizes and performances in the talent portion from the bravehearts.
A note from Miss Tick - Details on how to enter will appear soon-because important things always turn up when you're paying attention.

Many contestants in Discworld costumes from the Maskerade costume competition at the 2024 Australian Discworld Convention.

Some Fun Facts4

Did you know...?

  1. Miss Tick = Mystic. I mean, Miss Tick explains this herself in "The Wee Free Men", but perhaps you forgot.
  2. Perspicacia, which is a word: perspicacious, meaning to be knowledgeable on/in a particular subject/topic/field.
  3. "'You're very yellow for a toad.' 'I've been a bit ill,' said the toad."
Terry says: "I just happened to note a toad had a skin which had had unfortunately gone a bit yellow because it had been ill. Far be it from me to make a pun. You did that :-)"
(See The Annotated Pratchett File for the explanation)
  4. Lord Vetinari is a pun on the infamous Medicis. "Medici" meaning Medic or Doctor, "Vetinari" meaning animal doctor.
  5. Hence the nickname he had at the Assassins Guild School. "Dog-Botherer"
  6. The answer from September's unscrambling puzzle: Stamford Plaza.

You're welcome!
