The Fifth Elephant Never Forgets

Greetings from Überwald, the land of the Fifth Elephant! And a happy 75th birthday to Sir Terry Pratchett for the weekend just past (28th April).

This month we have some reminders for you about next year's convention.

Nullus Anxietas 9 - The Australian Discworld Convention - will be held on 12-14 July, 2024, at the Grand Chancellor Hotel, Adelaide, SA.

Have you visited our website yet?

The Australian Discworld Convention website - at https://ausdwcon.org - has had a complete overhaul for Nullus Anxietas 9, and we think it's quite thpooky and thpiffy. Head on over to see the new look, and here's a few pages you may wish to have a read of:

Our turtle mascot needs a name!

In case you missed it, here's our new logo, featuring the Nullus Anxietas 9 mascot:

Can you think of a great name for them? If so, please fill in this form and if your suggestion is chosen, you'll get to be very very proud about it. Oh, and there'll be a mystery prize pack too.

Competition entries close 31st May 2023, so you've got the rest of the month to come up with a wonderful name!

What's on at the convention?

If you've never been to a Discworld convention before, you might be wondering what to expect...

A good place to start is the Newcomer's ABC or the FAQ - but what you should really expect is three days of lots of fun activities. These will include:

  • Interviews and chats with special guests
  • Performances, presentations and panels
  • Art and craft workshops
  • Fun and games

And will include our traditional events:

  • The Maskerade - comprising costume, talent and prop competitions.
  • The Gala Dinner
  • Klatches with special guests (small, intimate chats)
  • The Charity Auction
  • The Quiz

The committee is hard at work preparing these activities - but we also need to hear from you about what you'd like to see, participate in, or even run! If you've got a good idea for an activity, panel or workshop, or you'd like to step up to be part of something listed above, then please fill in the volunteer form. Even if the idea is just a vague one at this stage, we'd love to hear from you, because we've got plenty of time1 to work out the details.

Becoming a member or buying a ticket... what does it all mean?

When you buy a ticket to Nullus Anxietas 9, you become a member of the convention - we want everyone to be involved in making the convention a memorable experience. So memberships and tickets are basically the same thing.

The main type of membership is Attending Membership - this is what you will need to purchase in order to actually attend the convention. It will grant you access to all three days of the convention, a bag full of goodies, and more.

Also available is a Supporting Membership - which is to pledge a bit of support to us - an entirely volunteer-run, not for profit association. Buying a supporting membership is also a good way to go if you want to attend, but aren't quite sure yet - because it reserves you a place (which can be important as past conventions have been known to sell out). You can upgrade from supporting to attending membership at any time up to 31 May 2024 via the shop - and importantly, if you buy your supporting membership price while the early bird sale is on, you can upgrade at early bird prices!

You can read more details about membership types here and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

A quick note on accommodation

Since we've announced the dates and venue, we've had a few people ask us about how they should book their hotel room at the Grand Chancellor Hotel. Our answer is: wait, please.

The hotel website isn't really set up for making a booking more than a year in advance, and we have been talking with them about getting a discount rate for convention attendees.

In July, we'll announce the details about this, and you will be able to go ahead and book your room. There should be no issues with space as there are more than enough rooms at the hotel to accommodate all visitors - and even if you don't want to stay at the Grand Chancellor, there are plenty of other accommodation options in the Adelaide CBD nearby, to suit all budgets.

Meet and chat with other fans

The convention is more than a year away, so if you're worried that you won't know anyone - well there's plenty of time to get to know at least some people!

The easiest way is to join our Facebook Community where everyone is encouraged to chat about all things Pratchett and the Australian Discworld Convention. There are also many fan clubs all around Australia, many of which have regular in-person or online social events. Join as many of them as you like! Feel free to also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube for regular updates, and of course, subscribe to the newsletter.

Discworld on Stage

We've heard a little bit about upcoming Discworld stage performances in Australia, but haven't got any firm details as yet - so please let us know if you're part of these productions, or if you've got more information that we can share with everyone in upcoming newsletters.

Got questions?

Please contact us if you have any questions about the convention, and we'll try to help you out!
